Breaks

How breaks work inside a running shift, with start, pause, resume, finish, and skip, plus duration limits and overtime states.

A Break is a step inside a running shift, not a separate page. When your admin adds a break step to a shift, it appears in the roadmap between your work steps and pauses your work timer without ending the shift.

The break step

The break step shows its name (defaulting to "Break"), a maximum-duration badge such as "30 min" with a "Maximum break duration" tooltip, a circular Break progress indicator, and a status badge that is one of ACTIVE, PAUSED, or OVER TIME LIMIT.

The timer reads either "{time} remaining" while you are inside the limit or "{time} overtime" once you pass it.

The controls

  • Start Break begins the break and pauses your work timer.
  • Pause freezes the break; Resume continues it.
  • Finish Break ends the break early and moves you to the next step.
  • Skip Break asks first ("Are you sure you want to skip this break? Taking regular breaks is important for your wellbeing and productivity.") then bypasses it with Yes, Skip Break.

When the break is done it shows "{label} completed" and the shift moves on.

Going over the limit

Breaks have a maximum duration set by your admin. Cross it and the badge flips to OVER TIME LIMIT, the timer starts counting overtime, and an alert appears: "Break time is up. You've exceeded the maximum break duration. Please finish your break now." Finish the break to get back on track; the overtime is recorded on the shift record.

Break time in your records

Break time is tracked separately from work time. It shows up in:

  • The shift's own record, as a completed Break step.
  • Your Reports overview card Break Time, and the Break Analytics section (total break time, average duration, frequency, paid vs unpaid, and a status distribution).
  • Payroll calculations, where paid and unpaid break time are handled per your organization's rules.

When a break fails

If something goes wrong the step shows a specific error ("Failed to start break session", "Failed to pause break session", and so on) and lets you retry rather than losing your shift.

Whether a shift has a break, how long it can be, and whether it is paid are all set by your admin in the shift's steps. If you do not see a break step, the shift does not include one.
